In the heart of the old town of Gray, this 18th century chateau houses rich collections. From the lower town you will easily see the medieval crenellated tower that marks the entrance to the park and to this beautiful house.
Of the medieval fortress, only the castle vaults, the square and its tower remain. Long a possession of the Spanish Empire of Charles Quint, the chateau was little by little refurbished following the conquest of Franche-Comté by Louis XIV. Refurbished between 1777 and 1783 by the Comte de Provence, a brother of Louis XVI, it became a pleasant leisure residence. An intimate and shady park with its panoramic viewpoint accompanies the chateau.
The 18th and 19th century salons on the ground floor, furnished and decorated with artistic objects, offer a historical and intimate backdrop to the presentation of paintings and sculptures from the end of the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. Among the most prestigious pieces : Van Kessel, Van Loo, Avercamp, Boucher, Tissot…
Every year, the great hall, situated on the first floor, is home to several temporary exhibitions focusing on the great artists of the 20th century who have profoundly influenced the history of international art (Dali, Chagall, Bernard Buffet…) and on the artistic expression of the great civilizations of the world (Africa, China, the Pacific…) The vast medieval vaults contain archeological collections.
Throughout the year, shows, events, visits and exhibitions renew the penetrating charm of this place. All the more reason to come to Gray.
