Musée-Galerie Carnot

Porte de Joigny, 2 Rue Carnot
89500 Villeneuve-sur-Yonne

In 2017, this space has been rebuilt in compliance with accessibility standards and preserving the Second Empire facades. It offers a museum and heritage space to host the municipal historical collections on the one hand, but also the works of contemporary artists in numerous temporary exhibitions, fulfilling its vocation as a gallery.

A space is devoted to the city and the different representations it has inspired over the years and artistic trends, and allows visitors to discover the wealth of talent of Villeneuvians, whether they were recognised painters such as Picabia (1879-1953), local amateurs or those who chose to live there, such as the Orientalist Théodore Balké (1875-1951). We will come across representatives of the new Paris School : Gaëtan de Rosnay (1912-1992), Michel de Gallard (1921-2007) and his wife Claude Autenheimer (1926-2013) or Luc Rechner, known as Lucas, (1924-2004) from the Marseilles School of Fine Arts, workshop companion of the sculptor César, organizer or participant in numerous events in the cultural life of the commune and its hamlets.

A room offers some of the most beautiful pieces of the municipal collections : the Works of Mercy, a 17th century painted panel, the portrait of Narcisse Menu de Chomorceau, works by Dominique Grenet (1821-1885) and Paul Sédille (1836-1900).

The place of the town of Villeneuve in the history of art and culture is traced with the Relais property, which was the summer residence of the Nabis (Édouard Vuillard, Pierre Bonnard, Ker-Xavier Roussel, Félix Vallotton, Maurice Denis and also Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec) and a host of other artists (Stéphane Mallarmé, English teacher at the Condorcet high school in Sens, Octave Mirbeau, Tristan Bernard, Alfred Jarry, and the composers Claude Debussy and Claude Terrasse),

Finally, Berthold Mahn (1881-1975), draughtsman and official illustrator of Roger Martin du Gard and Georges Duhamel, and the Villeneuve-born sculptor Emile Peynot (1850-1932), Grand Prix de Rome in 1880, are presented.

The top floor of the Porte de Joigny houses the Gendarmerie Museum and displays the collection covering two centuries of Gendarmerie history.
